Create from File

You can also create a project area using the Shape/KML tool. This tool allows you to upload an existing shapefile or KML file.

The shapefile must meet the following requirements:
• Shapefile must be a .zip file containing all the necessary files
• Shapefile must be in the NAD 1983 Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 13N projection
• Shapefiles may have multiple polygons; you can select one or more of these polygons.

To use a shapefile or KML as your Project Area, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Shape/KML tab in the New Project Area dialog.

  2. Select the File

    1. Click the Select File field to open the file browser and navigate to your file. Select the file and click Open. The application will load the shapes and zoom the map to the full extent of all polygons.

  3. Select the Polygon(s)

    1. Click Select and click on the polygon(s) on the map that you want to use as your defined Project Area. You must click Finished when you are done selecting.

  4. Apply a Buffer Distance

    1. This option allows you to define a buffer distance around the selected polygon. Click on the toggle switch to enable a buffer. By default, the buffer is not enabled. If the toggle switch is turned off, no buffer will be applied. The default buffer distance is 2 miles but can be increased or decreased to your desired size.

  5. Add a Project Name

    1. A project name is required for all project areas. The Create button will be
disabled until a project name is added.

  6. Click Create

    1. Once you have defined the boundary of your project area, applied a buffer if needed and given your project area a name, click Create to submit and create your new project area. Once created, your new project area can be found and selected through the Manage Project Areas dialog.
